Mathematics can be challenging for many young learners, but when students are constantly relocating, mathematical skills are often entirely neglected. Because many migrant Hispanic students struggle with measurement concepts and skills, the Hispanic Math Project undertook the development of a standalone computer tutorial that could instruct students. Because this program is independent of the school system, students are not impeded by redundancy or omissions as they transfer from school to school. The final product, contained online, is an interactive multimedia program that combines complex action script with flash animation to deliver developmentally appropriate instruction. To complete each lesson , students must help the animated characters "Kiri" and "Karlo" through a variety of adventures that require the use of measurement devices both on and off the computer screen. Each bilingual lesson features diagnostic testing, multiple learning paths, and flash animations in which working adults model various occupations such as cartography, cattle ranching, and banking.
